1. Introduction America is one of the most powerful and richest countries in the world. However, for all of America's greatness, the world has witnessed some strange events there recently. 2. How the American Political System Works The type of system in America is called a federal system which is a form of government in which power is divided between one central power and several regional powers (the 50 states). 3. Election Day After all the caucases and primaries the presidential candidates were ready for election day which took place on 7 November 2000. 4. Undervoting in Florida The Florida result was so close that an automatic recount was required by state law. The Bush lead over Gore was less than 1,000 out of nearly 6 million votes cast. 5. The Courts The battle for the White House went all the way to the US Supreme Court, in a sense putting the highest court in the land itself on trial. 6. Dubya (Republican) During his five years as Governor of Texas, Mr Bush was well-known for his two hour lunch breaks, time enough for a work out at the gym and time on occasions for playing his favourite video games. 7. Al Gore (Democrat) If anyone has been groomed for the White House, then it's Al Gore. Educated at two of the nation's top schools and universities, Al Gore's life has been one geared towards duty. 8. This has happened before! Two events from previous elections have striking parallels with Election 2000. 9. Concession After 36 days of anguish, Al Gore finally conceded defeat. He said he strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court ruling, but he urged all Americans to unite behind Mr. Bush. Voting in Florida Undervoting, chads, votamatic machines and butterfly ballot papers are all examined in the extraordinary count which took place in Florida State.
