Al Gore has a spotless personal life. Married in 1970, his wife Tipper became most well known for campaigns against the corrupting influence of rock music lyrics. They have four children.

If anyone has been groomed for the White House, then it's Al Gore. Educated at two of the nation's top schools and universities, Al Gore's life has been one geared towards duty. His mother even stopped his childhood violin lessons, saying: "Future world leaders do not play the violin".

He ruled himself out of the 1992 race after his son was nearly killed in a car accident. Instead, he chose to sign up as a vice presidential candidate with Bill Clinton.

Al tries to get cool

In an effort to boost his popularity and to show
the world that he wasn't the boring, wooden character
as portrayed by the media, Al engaged his wife, Tipper,
in a kissing embrace that lasted over a minute.
Poor Tipper nearly passed out from a lack of oxygen.

Al Gore's famous sense of duty came to the fore during the Monica Lewinsky crisis when he stood by the president, despite the obvious risks to his own future.

Joseph Lieberman's (pictured right) nomination as Al Gore's running mate makes him the first Jew ever to run on a US presidential ticket. Mr Lieberman is perhaps best known for being among the first congressional Democrats to attack President Clinton publicly on the senate floor, for his role in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Al Gore lost in his home state of Tennessee despite campaigning there right up to the closing days of the presidential race. No presidential candidate has lost their home state since George McGovern lost South Dakota to Richard Nixon in 1972.
