The African Continent Contains a fact file on Africa with a comprehensive map of the continent. 1. Africa In this first article on Africa, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia are examined. Eritrea, which was once a province of Ethiopia, is now fully independent. 2. Zimbabwe I: Fighting for Independence Robert Mugabe came to power in 1980 after Zimbabwe struggled for many years to gain independence. 3. Zimbabwe II: Mugabe in Power Mugabe's rule of Zimbabwe has been turbulent. A growing opposition movement threatens his hold on the country. 4. Zimbabwe III: The Fight for Land "The Land Question" was a major cause of the guerilla war which led to Zimbabwe's independence in 1980. Twenty years later very little has changed. 5. Ethiopia I: History of Ethiopia Ethiopia is unusual amongst African countries in that it has not been colonised by a European country for virtually its entire existence. 6. Ethiopia II: The Battle in the Horn Eritrea was a northern province of Ethiopia. In 1993 Eritrea held an election and voted overwhelmingly in favour of secession from Ethiopia leaving it land-locked. 7. Ethiopia III: Famine in the African Horn They said it could never happen again, but 15 years after Live Aid focused the world's attention on Ethiopia, the country is on the brink of another disaster.
