The situation was very delicate to say the least. Had American forces invaded, a nuclear war would likely have started. It was the closest the world had ever come to nuclear war.

Castro's Cuba
When Castro came to power he made sweeping economic and social changes. He allied his government with the Soviet Union whose leader was Krushchev. He seized and nationalised billions of dollars of American property.

2. 1959 Revolution
An account of the revolution carried out by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara which toppled the Batista government.

3. Bay of Pigs
This was an invasion of Cuba carried out by Cuban exiles and organised by the American government. It was a crude attempt to overthrow Castro. It ended in disaster.

4. Elian Gonzalez
Elian Gonzalez was plucked from the sea, floating in a rubber raft, on November 26th, 1999. His mother and stepfather, along with eight others, drowned in a desperate attempt to escape Cuba.

5. The Irish Connection
David Hickey is an Irish doctor who is canvassing to have the American embargo on Cuba lifted so that essential medical supplies can get into Cuba.

6. Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in 1962 as a result of conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was the closest the world had ever come to nuclear war.
