Waking with a hangover, he decided to quit drinking, found God and transformed himself into a man seeking high office.

During his five years as Governor of Texas, Mr Bush was well-known for his two hour lunch breaks, time enough for a work out at the gym and time on occasions for playing his favourite video games.

Now that he is set to take his place in the White House, George W Bush has the opportunity to step out of the long shadow cast by his father, former President George Bush.

son George W. Bush

This is where he stands on certain issues:
  • Death penalty - As governor of Texas he presided over the greatest number of executions in one year since the reintroduction of capital punishment
  • Abortion - Pro-life except for cases of rape, incest or to protect the mother's life
  • Gun control - Opposes greater restrictions
  • Environment - Believes in self-regulation by industry to clean up the environment.
His time at Yale University is said to have been dominated by drinking and partying with other members of the Skull and Bones fraternity. But in 1986 Mr Bush appeared to go through a religious awakening at the time of his 40th birthday. Waking with a hangover, he decided to quit drinking, found God and transformed himself into a man seeking high office.

When his first attempt at public office, a run for Congress failed, George W Bush vowed to stay out of politics until his father's political career had ended. His return to the public scene came two years after his father left the Oval Office when he ousted the sitting Governor of Texas.
