George W. Bush finally claimed the presidency on 13 December 2000. After a remarkable election battle, he praised Mr. Gore and also emphasised the need for reconciliation and unity.

Once the US Supreme Court effectively ruled that there was not enough time left to carry out a recount, the Presidential race was over because Al Gore had exhausted all legal avenues open to him.

The final results were as follows:
George Bush: 271 Electoral College votes
Al Gore: 266 Electoral College votes

After 36 days of anguish, Al Gore finally conceded defeat. He said he strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court ruling, but he urged all Americans to unite behind Mr. Bush. This is what Al Gore said live on television to the American people: 'Good evening. Just moments ago, I spoke with George W. Bush and congratulated him on becoming the 43rd. President of the United States, and I promised him that I wouldn't call him back this time. Now the US Supreme Court has spoken. Let there be no doubt, while I strongly disagree with the court's decision, I accept it.' George W. Bush finally claimed the presidency on 13 December 2000. After a remarkable election battle, he praised Mr. Gore and also emphasised the need for reconciliation and unity. 'I was elected not to serve one party but one nation,' he said. 'After a difficult election, we must put politics behind us... I am optimistic that we can change the tone in Washington.'

On Saturday 20 January 2001 George Bush was inaugrated as the 43rd. President of the United States.
