The Votamatic and Chads

How the Votamatic Machine works

Deciding a voter's intentions was extremely difficult. Because of machine faults or otherwise the tiny piece of paper that was meant to be punched out of the ballot paper (called a chad) somehow got stuck. The way it got stuck gave rise to a whole new set of terms like a pregnant chad or a swinging chad. Each counting centre had to decide on what was an acceptable vote. No consistent standard for determining a voter's intentions to vote for a particular candidate was adopted. This gave rise to accusations of tampering and manipulating the system. As votes were recounted in these three counties they came out overall in favour of Al Gore. But before they could finish recounting they were told to stop!

Butterfly Ballot Paper

The famous butterfly ballot paper which caused many Floridians to cast their vote for Pat Buchanan of the Reform party when they wished to vote for Al Gore. Notice how the Democratic and Reform parties are opposite each other. Hole No. 5 should have been punched to vote for Al Gore. However, many people punched Hole No. 4 and inadvertently cast their vote for Buchanan. It is an easy mistake to make.
