SMP Seloic Craic had just opened only a few months before September's violence. It is the brainchild of Luis Henriques who saw that children from his community were walking up to 17 kilometres to school each morning and unable to concentrate. It is a junior high school (SMP) which means it teaches the equivalent of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years. There are 80 students and 10 teachers, but none of the teachers are trained and are mostly students or locals with some education. They are using an old primary school building and have no uniforms. Now that the occupation is over, he is trying to really get the school started, but it suffers from a shortage of teachers and supplies. The school is positioned in a beautiful, quiet valley.
