A decision to do this is not to be taken lightly and requires a lot of commitment on your part. Once you are friends with the Timorese, they will not forget you and you must not forget them.

........SMAK Saint Antonio, Manatuto

Manatuto town was very severely destroyed by the Indonesians and this includes Saint Antonio school which had many of its classrooms burned down. Despite this the students are all very eager to go to school and were very interested in contact with Irish students. Anita Guterres said in her letter that "We in East Timor are now just starting to feel good, peaceful and free for the first time. We didn't feel this in the past, because if we just sang a Falantil [pro-independence] song the militia could grab us." There are 100 students and it is a senior high school (i.e. SMA 4th, 5th and 6th years), but only has 6 teachers. In the past there were four senior high schools in the area, but all the others were destroyed. Since it is a time of transition, many students haven't returned to school yet. Like many other areas in East Timor, they are still awaiting the return of friends and family from Indonesian West Timor. There are possibly 1,500 people still unreturned to Manatuto.
