Indonesia is the fourth most populated country in the world with over 200 million people. It consists of over 17,000 islands of which 3,000 are inhabited. Over a half of the population live on Java which is only the fifth largest island in Indonesia. The capital, Jakarta, is on Java. Indonesia lies in South-East Asia in the world's largest archipelago. Indonesian islands extend one-eighth the perimeter of the Earth in a 3,500 mile crescent. The island of Timor lies 500km from Australia and 1000km from Java. It is divided into East Timor (now independent) and West Timor (part of Indonesia). The capital of East Timor is Dili and the population was believed to have been 800,000 of whom 250,000 were massacred. |
