One of the strongest indicators of global warming is the breaking off of huge icebergs from the polar caps. This process is called calving. These icebergs present huge problems for ships. The most famous shipping incident involving an iceberg was the sinking of the Titanic. In 1992 a giant iceberg broke off from Antarctica. It is called B10A which is part of a coding system devised to keep track of all these icebergs. It continues to travel heading for the southern coast of Argentina. It travels seven to nine miles per day. At the moment it is about the size of Kildare county. The main danger for ships is not B10A which can be seen for miles but the tiny icebergs that keep breaking off. This calving can result in icebergs that are up to one kilometre wide. |
