Whistling
out of tune
Sheena McHugh
Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown
Dedicated to the children of the Ardoyne
Four years old
Innocent and naïve
What do I know about
Hatred, bigotry and hostility?
My small hand held tightly
Warm and safe
Full of excitement
Bounding down the road.
Round the corner
Cold eyes, sharp tongues
Staring and cutting
And I'm just starting school.
"Look down at your new shoes"
Shiny, black and clean
Dancing far too fast
For the crowds whistling tune.
Tears flowing down my cheeks
But I can't say why
Bunting and flags all around
But who's celebrating?
I didn't think it would be like this
The children have whistles
When they should have lollipops
I think I'll stay at home tomorrow.
