WHERE WERE YOU?
(For Powell, Marion and W.)

George N.E.L. Cohen
St. Colman's College, Fermoy

Men sent war when merely boys
cannot be brought back by mother's cries,
all of those who die, die in vain,
good, bad, brave, cowardly,
all bodies pile the same.

An image of John Wayne runs through a kid's head
but then the truth hits and stops him, dead.
The smell of scorched flesh emanates from the ground,
there is nothing but loudness;
no distinguishable sound.

The brave man sits many miles from the front,
remembering fondly a distant fox-hunt.
The privates cry quietly in their hole,
whispering long remembered prayers,
not enough to save their souls.

The men look up and hope for a lot,
God does not help, he is afraid of being shot.
Too late for any good, peace talks begin,
one country's finally in the mood
to give the other a ring.
