What
is the POINT?
Sinead O'Connor
Causeway Comprehensive School
Sixth year, the most important year of all. A year where
our bodies run on adrenaline alone. Those late nights and early mornings.
Our dreams of David Beckham or Caprice purged, thanks to biological mitosis
and maths formulae. Correct me if I'm wrong but, isn't x + y
the equation of
Robbie Williams in shorts? Is all the effort, pressure
and hardwork worth it? During the next twenty school weeks, this will
be the question at the back of all our minds. Little cracks of doubt will
begin to etch themselves into our brains.
This leaving cert shouldn't be any different to any other
but it is with the fear of World War 3 on the minds of everyone. On Tuesday
the 11th of September, the security and stability of the USA was severely
damaged as the twin towers, symbol of economic strength, and the Pentagon,
a symbol of military strength, were reduced to rubble. Hearts were broken
and families torn apart. Thousands were killed and many more are still
missing. The whole world was shell-shocked! Eventually the hurt and fear
wafted its way across the Atlantic Ocean. It is now programmed into the
mindsets of the Irish psyche. Rumours and threats of chemical attacks
and bombings in England make a war, World War 3, seem inevitable. Although,
as Andrew Bonar-Law said in 1913 "there is no such thing as an inevitable
war. If war comes it will be from a failure of human wisdom".
So, is the pressure and hardwork that induces an endless
number of sleepless nights just a huge waste of time? In classrooms all
around the country there are the next generation of doctors, journalists,
teachers, carpenters, psychologists, engineers and many other professions.
While the terrorists have killed many Irish as well as other nationalities
in America, and may in our lifetime strike closer to home, we are safe
for the moment. We cannot allow the actions of terrorists to succeed in
killing our spirits. We must be strong!
So, yes, the effort and pressure will be worth it. When all is over a
new generation of doctors, engineers, journalists, builders, psychologists,
etc. will be needed.
