Cead
Mile Failte
Sheena McHugh
Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown
Today, at the start of another long week
Walking aimlessly up and down
Wearing the pavements of the town.
Today I shopped for the bare essentials
Looks of suspicion, doubt and mistrust
Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek and the just.
Today I collected my meagre allowance
Words like charity and handouts sting and burn
I'm strong, able-bodied and willing to learn.
Today, memories of home filtered through
Yes I'm safe and secure but in heart and mind
There's pain and longing for those left behind.
Today sitting in my one roomed home
Unfettered by chains but still not free
Trapped in a jail that no one can see.
Today the church bell called us to worship
One of the crowd but on display
Hurt and angered by what they say.
Today the week has come to an end
Cead mile failte they say with pride
Well just one this week would have satisfied.
