Clare Egan reviews movies, music and
books
Movies
o The Green Mile
The Green Mile has been nominated for four Oscars and is probably the best
film released in a long time! Its about a black man accused of murder who
befriends his jailer (played by Tom Hanks). What can I say? It'll make you
laugh, it'll make you cry but most of all it'll make you want to see it
again! Although it is three and a half hours long it is so beautiful that
time flies by! Watch out for Mr.Jingles (the little mouse) who would win
an Oscar, if it could speak. The acting is brilliant and you'll feel as
though you are actually in the film (or does that just happen to me?).
o Toy Story 2
If you liked Toy Story 1, you'll love this one! I laughed until I couldn't
laugh anymore. If you think that you are too old for this movie than you
are sooo missing out! And if there are those among you who would be embarrassed
going in to a G rated movie then go with your younger siblings, cousins,
nieces, etc.! The two reasons why this isn't up for an Oscar is that the
characters can't go up and accept it and no Hollywood star wants to be upstaged
by toys!
o The Bachelor
Chris O'Donnell is a man who likes playing the field. But when the time
comes when he HAS to get married in order to gain an inheritance, his long
time love walks out on him and he has to find somebody to marry, fast! This
film is very, very funny. Too bad he is married in real life!
Singles
o Honeyz 'I won't take it lying down'
A cool song for anyone who ever wanted to tell their lovers that they
are not wallowing in a pit of despair just because they left! Very catchy
chorus.
o NSync 'bye bye bye'
I'm a fan of 'NSync so if they were singing 'The telletubies song' I'd
still go out and buy it. But this song is really good, very catchy with
a great beat! The message in the song is that you don't need a lover if
they're treating you badly.
o Eiffel 65 'Move your body'
Fans of 'Blue' will love this. People think the music is similar but I
don't see it. A real dance tune, very catchy.
o All Saints 'Pure shores'
Most people will know this from the film 'The Beach' starring that fella
from 'Titanic'. This has a very mellow tune and a real song to unwind
too.The girls have sprang back from having babies and making movies and
this is a really good song to come back with. The singing is great and
although I am not a great fan of All Saints I went out and bought it as
soon as I heard it.
o Backstreet Boys 'Show me the meaning of been lonely'
Beautiful slow song. If you are looking for a real good upbeat song I
don't recommend this.
o Geri Halliwal 'Bag it up'
Another hit for the Ginger one. She has done so well since she left the
Spice Girls and has had a string of hits. Ok I admit her videos are a
bit weird what with aliens and men with pink hair but this song is really
good. Very lively and upbeat. I can't see myself dancing to it in a club
but for everyday use on your stereo and just to go mad around your room
with a hairbrush, this is the song for it!
o Madonna 'American Pie'
When I first heard this I couldn't believe that she of all people did
'American Pie', and thought that she had ruined the song completely. But
after a while it grows on you and you find yourself humming it to yourself.
Its one of those songs that you can never get out of your head!
o 5ive 'Don't wanna let you go'
Their latest single from their new album 'Invincable'. It has a catchy
chorus but for me they sound too much like deranged psycopaths running
around after their girlfriend! Could somebody please tell me what the
song is about!
Books
o Helen Keller by Carolyn Sloan
I never though that I'd end up liking this book as I hate biographies. This
is a true story about Helen Keller who overcame her handicap with the
help of her friend Annie Sullivan. With a strong will and determination
she achieved academic success and became a lecturer who travelled the
world on behalf of the blind. This book gives a short but descriptive
profile of her life. This book is part of a series of profiles books printed
by Evans brothers Limited.
o The Teenage Worriers Guide to Love by Ros Asquith
This book could best be discribed as a dictionary of LURVE! It is written
by Letty Chubb, a lanky 15 year old with no 'buzooms', a tangled love
life, an adorable devil-in-disguise little brother and an aging but loveable
cat who provokes asthma. This book has a laugh a sentence and tells you
all you'll ever need to know about lurve, sex and aardvarks. Ros Asquith
is the brilliant author of four books in the 'Teenage Worriers' series.
Printed by Corgi Books.
