Peter Ward
St. Fintans, Sutton
Peter Ward reports on a remarkable season
for St. Fintans, Sutton
Last season St. Fintans was placed on the map due to the performance
of its first All-Ireland winning basketball team as they finally established
themselves at the top of Irish schools Basketball.
With an historic Dublin double (the league and championship), the St.
Fintans trophy cabinet was bulging after these trophies were joined by
the Bank of Ireland, Under 19A, Schools Cup.
Last season's team was led by their inspirational captains, Jonathan
Grennell and Ger Crowe, and the team's top scorer, Simon Behan. This season's
team are trying to emulate last years success as they bid to defend their
titles in the last campaign of the millennium. They say goodbye to both
Jonathan and Ger, who have left St. Fintans for third level, but welcome
back Michael Westbrooks after he spent his Transition Year at Dearborn
High School in Detroit. His year has obviously done him good but he says
he missed the physical side of the Irish game during his time out. In
addition, nine of last years squad returned.
This season has got off to a winning start with St. Fintans losing only
one of their first seven games. Although they were largely written off
due to the departure of Grennell and Crowe, the Fintans' boys have proved
themselves a force to be reckoned with by beating two of the top seeds
in Ireland. They have already reached the semi-final of the B.0.I. Cup
and the Final of the Dublin League and look set for another winning season.
With Simon Behan and Michael Westbrooks, who both regularly turn out for
the Killester National League team, both on top form, ably assisted by
Mark Grennell, St. Fintans have a strong core of players.
But this team have also been unlucky with injuries with Westbrooks, Ian
Barrett and Mark Grennell missing several games, with ankle, hand and
foot injuries, respectively. The teams starting centre, Peter Ward, is
also out until next season due to a broken ankle sustained while playing
against St. Mels from Longford.
With up and coming young talent, such as Conor Kirwan and Isaac Westbrooks
coming off the bench, and last years players stepping up, confidence is
high within the team and coach Jerome Westbrooks is quietly confident
that they can repeat last year's achievements.
