The
words of an Irish unborn child

As I slumber
here in my mother’s womb
and wait for
the drive to the hospital, the Coombe,
I cannot wait
to taste my first breath of air
My mother must
love me though my pain she must bear
I thank
my father for giving this life
It’s the first
big beginning for husband and wife
I am being fed
through a tiny cord
I can now hear
the noise of the maternity ward.
Within a
few hours I will be on this earth
I hope my mother
will get through this birth
I started to
cry because of little pain
and without little
help my head I did gain
I can now
feel myself in the hands of a nurse
I weigh about
the size of a 7lb purse
I can taste and
scent lovely warm milk
I must be special
because I am wrapped in silk
I am getting
a drive in my car
I am going home
which to me is far
I can feel my
first toy, it’s a teddy bear I got
I will say goodbye
now as I sleep in my cot.
