The Power of Music

Holly Mack
Portmarnock CS, Co. Dublin

Some say music has become a major commercial industry, an overrated marketing scam and a very influential weapon in our modern world today. Whether it is pop, rock, punk, hip-hop or R’n’B, each genre has hundreds and thousands of followers and supporters. In my opinion, the world would be a much sadder, less fortunate place without music. It is an element that brings people with similar interests together, it shares emotions of love and hate with its listeners and bestows magic in the hearts of those who make it. This is the power of music.

Currently Europe has been overtaken by a surge of Limp Bizkit-style bands which may or may not have been put together by a music mogul. Examples of these could be Crazytown and Linkin Park. These two groups sport many tattoos and a angry outlook on the world, similar to that of Limp Bizkit or the original trend-setter - Eminem. Needless to say, these groups have risen triumphantly in the market as hundreds of teenagers relate to their lyrics and image and subsequently go out and buy their records and overpriced merchandise. Although they are not appreciated by our older generations, we still take a liking to them and similar bands such as Green Day and Offspring. Before this current trend of punk/rock bands, there was a very obvious boy-band obsession among the pre-teen and teen girls of the world - bands such as Westlife, A1 and nSync were formed following the success of Backstreet Boys and Five.

Whatever we like individually, whomever we support and which ever bands’ albums we go out and buy, we all are influenced by this powerful combination of music and expression. Music may be a few notes strummed on a guitar, it may be the beat of a drum or the melody of a flute. Music draws emotions, makes us feel a certain way and is a powerful element in advertising because of this fact. Although it may be a powerful economic element where marketing is concerned, it is also something that touches the heart of those who appreciate, enjoy or make the music. The Power of Music is something to always appreciate.
