Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett

Joseph Galvin
Ballincollig CS

The wizard Drum Billet knows that death is near and is determined to leave his magical staff to a new wizard before it's too late. In the village of Bad Ass, the blacksmith's wife is currently in labour with a new child, and since the child will have seven brothers and the smith himself is an eighth son it seems apparent the baby will be a wizard. But does it work that way if the child is a girl? And if not, will she be a witch? Eskarina, the newborn child, was given the powers of a wizard, but is she one?

It’s decided that the village witch, Granny Weatherwax, should raise her. Granny doesn't like wizard magic, and is set on raising Esk a witch. She does a very good job at it, but after a while decides to send her to Unseen University in Ankh Morpork to learn how to control her powers. A young, female wizard and an old witch from the mountains can get into quite a lot of interesting things on a trip like this, and they do. But things really heat up when the destination is reached.

Readers, who already know the witches are in for a surprise, Granny isn't the Granny we all know and respect! The story is entertaining and works excellently as an example of female rights in a male world. First time readers of Pratchett's Discworld series will also enjoy it. It makes a mockery of the usual fantasy stories such as the Hobbit and is very humourous. However, if fantasy stories do not suit you and you don't enjoy slapstick humour, I advise you against choosing this book. Overall, another good book from Pratchett that won't disappoint fans.
