Apartment
3b by Patricia Scanlan
Linda O'Reilly
Ballincollig CS, Co
Cork
Apartment 3b is a novel set
in Ireland from the 60’s to the 80’s. Its focuses on the sale of an expensive
and rather luxurious apartment in Glasnevin, Co. Dublin. The apartment
complex boasts an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and a pool room.
Liz Lacey, a successful artist who has decided to move to Majorca and
make a fresh start, is selling the apartment. The novel takes us through
three decades of Liz's life and the lives of the five people who are hoping
to purchase her penthouse. Each one of the five possible owners is completely
different with both interesting and entertaining pasts. The novel transports
us deep in to their sometimes traumatic pasts that include adultery, death
and alcoholism. As we travel through their lives we become aware of how
each of them became financially able to purchase Apartment 3b. We learn
how Cecily Clarke manipulated her husband into bidding for the apartment
and how Clare Moran worked long and hard to be in the position to afford
it. The novel is an easy, enjoyable bedtime read. It is the type of book
that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. Throughout the course of
the novel as you become acquainted with each of the characters, you begin
to choose the one you want to get the apartment. The answer to the question,
'who will acquire the apartment?’ is left until the final page. Patricia
Scanlan proves why she is a best selling novelist, as this book contains
everything needed to entertain. If you are looking for an enjoyable, light
read then look no further.
