Fanatic about Food

Ciara O Donovan
Bantry, Co. Cork

'Diet', 'de-toxing' and 'get fit' are the words on everybody's lips but, as the new year passes us by, so do our resolutions. For most, number one on most lists is chocolate. Now, as Lent draws near these broken resolutions are being made again until Easter (or 'national chocoholics day') arrives.

For those who crave sugar there is good news, your troubles could soon be over. Scientists have recently discovered a way of preventing those dreaded cravings by using a simple vanilla patch to curb your ravenous sugar addiction. The bad news is that these patches are not yet available in Ireland. When chocolate is eaten (devoured) a chemical called Seretonin is released which makes us feel good (as we all know). But, according to medical evidence, bananas produce the same effects - so, next time you want comfort food, reach for the fruit bowl.

While dieting, you should treat yourself now and then. Many healthy diets can become an obsession (orthorexia nervosa) where a person devotes most of their time to planning, preparing and eating meals. This condition effects the body both physically and mentally. It is also important to realise that there are 'fad' diets that may be dangerous. Examples of these crash diets include the cabbage soup diet, long-term detox plans, raw foodists and the famous Dr. Atkins diet that involves eating no carbohydrate (this diet is responsible for Jennifer Anniston's alarming weight loss). My advice is to follow the food pyramid's guidelines as the true path to optimum health.
