Presentation SS, Ballyphehane,
Cork
As everybody broke up for
the Summer, four lucky students from Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane,
Cork received the chance of a lifetime. They won a trip to Malta. It was
part of a seminar that was being organised for first year. On 1 July they
finally embarked on their trip accompanied by four students from Carrigaline
Community School, Cork. Various meetings were attended throughout in preparation
for the seminar.
Ten countries participated
from throughout Europe. The countries were Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark,
Estonia, Greece, Malta, Ireland, Romania and Slovenia. Altogether 80 students
and 20 teachers participated. The Maltese Minister for Education, Dr.
Louis Galea, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Ms. Mechtilde
Fuhrer, officially opened the seminar. There were three topics on the
agenda: Student Councils, Bullying and Electronic Magazines.
Ireland, Austria, Belgium
and Malta studied Student Councils. It was almost embarrassing to realise
how advanced our Student Council is in Presentation Secondary School.
We were more established than the others. Our Student Council has been
running for almost twenty years whereas Malta's and Belgium's councils
have only been operating for a few years.
Our trip to Malta was not
all work though. After our work we visited religious festivals, Valetta
(the capital of Malta), historical multimedia shows and the island of
Gaza. The temperature reached 48 degrees Celsius and visits to the beach
were very frequent! The most beautiful beach in Malta is Ghadira Bay,
with golden sand and clear Mediterranean water. It's a shame there is
not another seminar.
