Lesson III | Chatrooms

Lesson IV

Hi and welcome to the fourth and final article of Mikes Web Development. In this final issue I will answer all the questions I got in through e-mail. Also, I will tell you how to add your own pictures to your website and various other HTML. At the end of this article I will have a summary of the previous issues containing the most important points from them. Thanks a lot for all your e-mails and feedback on my articles since I began before Christmas. Well enough of that, lets move on to the fun stuff!!!!!

Search Engines
Now that your webpage(s) is ready with loads of cool things to do you just need one more thing: You need to advertise your site through something really big - a search engine. Millions of people use search engines to look up information daily on loads of different topics. To add your site to a search engine you first have to search on a search engine for these words or something like them: 'Submit my site to Altavista (or whatever search engine you want your site on. I recommend Altavista because it is very popular along with Yahoo and Lycos )'. Once you have typed your words click on search and thousands of webpages will come up. Most of these will be useless for what you are looking for but if you look you will find the thing you want. When you have entered the site you want, make sure you don't have to pay anything. Usually these big sites will not only let you enter your page into one search engine, they also usually let you admit your site to hundreds of different search engines.

When entering your site make sure you don't give any personal information e.g. password to your site, where you live etc. If you absolutely have to give information, then make something up. Once you have your site entered you may get e-mails saying it will be up in a few days or something like that. Some will also say that they were unable to process your request or whatever but it doesn't really matter as long as your site is in the big search engine or the one that you wanted in the first place. Also make sure you type in good keywords (the words that people searching will see) so that it sounds good enough for people to visit your site. So if you put your keyword down as penpals, when people searching on the engine where your website is located and search for the keyword, penpals, they will find your site at the top. Your site will usually go down as more and more people enroll so a good thing is to every so often enroll our site again in the same place and for a while it will be at the top.

Other ways of Advertising
Apart from search engines a good way of advertising is going to a really popular site, e.g. Saras Cyberworld who has over half a million visitors and ask if she would link your page on her page (if you ask her she usually does). You should get an instant increase in visitors to your site but she only links you for a few days. Another good way is signing a lot of guest books on peoples sites (that's how Sara started off) and message boards etc. Also link exchange - where you link someone on your page if they link you in return. Banner exchange is basically the same only it is with banners. You can make banners if you have a paint program like Paint Shop Pro or sometimes on people's sites they may offer to make banners for you. Some big websites let you put on classified ads about your site. Also the people who gave you your site (e.g. expage.com gave me the space for my site) has a special directory for all their pages so that you can enroll in a special directory!!!!!

Get Paid Programs
Getting paid for doing stuff on the Internet can be good and bad. Some are true and some are not. You just have to be very careful in what you do because these are very dodgy as you are giving away your real address. Some programs pay you for reading or sending e-mail, visiting different sites, @eopinions.com they pay you for giving your opinion, and even pay you for going on the Internet. I have joined one that pays you for going on the Internet.

Cool Links

Thanks everyone for sending in their websites to me. Unfortunately I can only link a few here:

  • http://www.wowzers.net: This is really a digital page which is only beginning but offers things such as free homepages and cool stuff by my friend Josh.
  • http://www.funky-chickens.com: Thanks for sending your website Sara. This is a really cool HTML help page teaching you everything you need to know for your website. Sara is the person who has the half a million hits on her mainpage!!!
  • http://www.bkfk.cjb.net: By Kids for Kids is the motto of Aarons page. This is a page for kids under 12 but I think he told me he is working on a teen section. His page has downloads, chat and loads more.
  • http://www.gotoworld.com: This is a really cool site where you can download viewbars, chat in different languages and get paid and loads more. Definitely not to be missed.
  • http://www.thesimpsons.com: This is a really cool site if you like The Simpsons. Here you can get e-mail @thesimpsons.com, you can buy stuff, look at past and future episodes and post on message boards.
  • http://www.theoscars.com: If you are interested in Hollywood stars then you might want to find out who won what in this year's Oscars. Here you will find all the information you need to know.

Well that's the end of the series. I really hope it helped you in some way and was enjoyable. See-ya, ~*Mike*~
